¶331 [revised as ¶N01-01]
DANGERFIELD4 DOBYNS
(SAMUEL3, CHARLES2,
DANIELI) (from ¶328)
was born in Richmond Co VA on 30 Nov 1765. (fn 405) On 23 Oct 1788
Daingerfield Dobyns signed a petition, apparently by citizens of
Buckingham Co VA, on behalf of John Benning. See Virginia Genealogical Society
Quarterly,
vol 28, no 2, p 103+. By Montgomery Co VA marriage bond dated 3 Nov
1795, he married Eve Barger, daughter of Philip Barger and Eve Clements
his wife. Dangerfield Dobyns moved to Montgomery Co by 1800. He was an
early and successful school master in the Blacksburg area of Montgomery
Co VA for about forty years. There are numerous deeds recorded there in
his name from Sept 1800 to 1825. He appears in the Personal Property
Tax Books of Montgomery Co each year from 1806 to 1814. In the U.S.
Census for 1810 he appears with his wife and four children under ten and
one child between 10 and 16. About 1834 Dangerfield Dobyns, then
almost age 69, and some of his family, picked up stakes and moved to
Shelby Co IN. He and his wife conveyed property in Montgomery Co, in
anticipation of this move, in 1834 to James Bryens. Dangerfield died
after, probably very soon after, 1 Aug 1835.
There was an account of John Barger Dobyns, a leading citizen of Marion Co IN, published in
Pictorial and Biographical Memoirs of Indianapolis and Marion County Indiana,
published in 1893 by Goodspeed Brothers of Chicago. In this generally
but not entirely accurate account, Dangerfield Dobyns and his family are
said to have arrived at Flat Rock, Shelby Co IN on 9 Nov 1834.
According to the General Land Office (GLO) records, Dangerfield Dobyns
applied for three land patents for land in Johnson Co IN by personally
appearing before appropriate officials in Indianapolis on 1 Aug 1835.
The actual issue date of the land patents was 20 Mar 1837, by which time
Dangerfield had apparently died and the process was completed by his
wife and children. He obtained 160 acres of land at a cost of $1.25 per
acre.
According to the John Barger Dobyns biographical listing, Dangerfield
became ill on the way home from applying for the land and died shortly
thereafter in Shelby Co IN. This was apparently from a contagious
disease of some sort, because John Barger Dobyns became ill at the same
time.
Eve Dobbins appears at age 71 in the 1850 census of White River
Township, Johnson Co IN in the household of her son John Dobbins, age
31. Thus she was born about 1779. She also appears at age 92 in the
1870 census of Marion Co, Perry Twp, living with her son John Barger
Dobyns. She apparently died at the age of 93.
There was a series of deeds recorded in Johnson Co from four of the
children of Dangerfield Dobyns or their heirs to either John B. Dobyns, a
fifth child of Dangerfield Dobyns or to William H. Dobbins, grandson of
Dangerfield Dobyns, conveying land from the estate of their father and
grandfather Dangerfield. The first was from his daughter Mahala Dobyns
to John B. Dobyns dated 27 Jan 1847. The second was from Thomas Dobyns
and Hannah D. Dobyns his wife to John B. Dobyns, dated 12 Feb 1846. The
third was from Elizabeth Dobbins, widow of William A. Dobbins, and
William's children and spouses, Virginia Evans and Warrenton B. Evans
her husband, John B. Dobbins and Mary Dobbins his wife, and Isa Isom
(Ison) and Helen R. Isom (Ison) his wife to William H. Dobyns,
apparently another son of William A. Dobbins, dated 4 Nov 1852. The
fourth was from Kennerly Dobyns to John B. Dobyns, dated 23 Apr 1857.
Thus, it appears that the children of Dangerfield Dobyns and Eve Barger his wife were
William A. Dobyns, prob b 1795-1800 (See ¶N01-06)
Samuel Dobyns. This is possibly the Samuel Dobyns who patented 40 acres
of land in Morgan Co IN, with a patent issuing in 1838 (Document 28768)
Thomas Jefferson Dobyns (See ¶N01-04)
Mahala Dobyns, prob b 1804-1810 (See ¶N01-03)
Margaret Dobyns, prob b 1810-1815
Henry M. Dobyns, prob b 1810-1815, living in 1847 when the real estate
of Dangerfield Dobyns in Johnson Co IN was partitioned. This may be the
Henry M. Dobbins 37, farmer, who appeared with his wife Elizabeth 41
and no children in the 1850 Census of Montgomery Co VA and at age 46
with Elizabeth 55 in the 1860 census of the same county.
Katherine Dobyns, prob b 1815-1820 VA, m Marvin Adams
John Barger Dobyns, b 8 Jan 1819 (See ¶N01-05)
Kennerly Dobyns, b 1820-1825 (See ¶N01-02)
Christian Dobyns, b 1820-1825
------
¶N01-02 KENNERLY DOBYNS (from ¶N01-01)
was born about 1821 in Montgomery Co VA. His name was variously
spelled Kinnley, Kenaly and Kinnerly. On the 1850 census, Kenely
Dobins, a farmer from Virginia, appeared in the enumeration for Union
Town, Trinity Co CA, working as a miner on 28 Sept 1850. He married
(1st) on 24 Mar 1854 in Franklin, Johnson Co IN to Esther A. Groseclose,
daughter of Jacob Groseclose and his wife Elizabeth Lowe. Kennerly and
Esther and most of the Groseclose family moved to Story Co IA about
1854. They settled in the southern part of Story Co in an area known as
Cambridge where Kennerly became a successful wheat farmer. Esther was
born about 1828 and died about 1872 at age 44. She gave birth to five
children, but developed severe depression and spent much of 12 years in
the Iowa Hospital for the Insane in Mt Pleasant IA before her death.
Kennerly then married (2nd) in Jan 1872 Mary Eliza Kelso, a full-blooded
Cherokee, who had been his housekeeper and helped raise his children by
the first marriage. About 1876 they moved from Iowa to Texas. There
are some recorded accounts that the family lived in Grayson Co TX, but
traveled between Texas and the Chickasaw Nation. In 1888 Mary Eliza and
Kennerly died the same day of yellow fever, apparently being exposed to
this disease while waiting for an opportunity to cross the flooded Red
River with a herd of horses and cattle that they were bringing home to
Texas. Their orphaned children, except Oscar, left for the Chickasaw
Nation, Indian Territory, to work on the cattle ranch of Holmes Willis.
Charles worked on the Willis ranch and other ranches for several years
to support his younger siblings.
Children of the first marriage were
John Jacob Dobyns, born about 1857 in Story Co IA. He married (1st) an
unidentified spouse about 1888 and fathered four children. He married
(2nd) Mary J. Dobbs, born about 1854. There is a record that J.J.
Dobyns, age 47, married Mary J. Dobbs, age 50, on 23 Dec 1904 at Leigh,
Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. In the 1900 Census he appears among
the inmates at Leavenworth Penitentiary. In the 1920 Census he appears
in Boone Twp, Coal Co OK with his wife Mary J. Dobyns.
Elizabeth C. Dobyns, born Oct 1859 in Story Co IA, died after 1889,
married Mr Barnett. Apparently she was the Bettie Barnett, sister, in
the 1900 census listing with Thomas Dobbyns in Chickasaw Nation, Indian
Territory.
Ella M. Dobyns, born 5 Mar 1862 in Story Co IA, died 4 Dec 1885 at
Whitehead, Garvin County, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (now
Oklahoma)
Thomas Jefferson Dobyns, b 27 Mar 1864 (See ¶N01-07)
Martha Elmira Dobyns, b 23 Oct 1866 (See ¶N01-08)
Children of the second marriage were
Oscar Dobyns (See ¶N01-09)
Charles Kinley Dobyns (See ¶N01-10)
Infant son, d 20 Feb 1875, buried at Center Grove Cemetery, Cambridge, Story Co IA with
stone
Joseph Marion Dobyns (See ¶N01-200)
David Fletcher Dobyns (See ¶N01-11)
Viola Gertrude Dobyns (See ¶N01-12)
Infant child, born about 1887, died 1888 in Texas in same yellow fever epidemic as parents.
------
¶N01-03 Mahala Dobyns (from ¶N01-01) is
probably the same Mahala Dobyns who presented a family Bible to Francis Marion Dobyns (See
¶N01-55) in 1859 as mentioned in ¶515.
She was born about 1810 in Montgomery Co VA. There is no indication
that she ever married. Mahala Dobyns received a patent for 40 acres of
land in Johnson Co IN in 1837. In 1860 she was living in Johnson Co
with her brother John Barger Dobyns. She was not there in 1870.
------
¶N01-04 Thomas Jefferson Dobyns (from ¶N01-01)
was born in Mar 1807 and died about 1854. He married Hannah Delaney
Burdick, born 22 July 1817, died 23 July 1889 in Douglas Co MO. For the
1850 census he was living in White River Twp, Johnson Co IN, age 43,
with wife Hannah D. Dobbins, 32, and children Easter C. 15, John M 12,
William K 9, Irene M. 7, A.D. (male) 3, and Thomas R. 7 months. They
lived on the next farm to John Barger Dobyns.

------
¶N01-05 John Barger Dobyns (from ¶N01-01)
was born 8 Jan 1819 in Montgomery Co VA and died after 1900. For some mostly accurate
information, see Pictorial and Biographical Memoirs of Indianapolis and Marion County
Indiana
(1893). He married Elizabeth Gaston, born about 1819 in Ohio. It is
impossible to completely reconcile the list of his children from this
published account with the list of children in the 1850, 1860 and 1870
census listings. This list below is a best effort. However, this
totals twelve children, and John Barger Dobyns is supposed to have said
that he and his wife had a total of eleven children. He appeared as
J.B. Dobyns, age 81, in the 1900 Marion Co IN census, together with his
widowed daughter M.C. Groves, age 52.
Their children
Missouri C. Dobyns, born about 1843, m 14 Apr 1890 Hendrick Co IN to
Robert T. Graves or Groves. The 1900 census lists her birthdate as Apr
1848, but that is not correct. In the 1910 Indianapolis, Marion Co IN,
census, she appeared at age 67 in a household with her sister Mary
Morgan, widow, 65, and Mary's son Jerome M. Morgan, 32.. Before
marriage she was a school teacher.
Mary E. Dobyns, born about 1845, m 29 Feb 1872 Dr Abram Morgan. Abram
died before 1910. They had two children, Walter A. Morgan and Jerome
Morgan. In the 1910 census Jerome M. Morgan, 32, was a baker at a
biscuit company. In the 1920 Indianapolis census, Jerome M. Morgan, 42, a
distiller for a drug company, appeared with his wife Emma E. Morgan 49
and two nieces surnamed Zeegler.
Phoebe America Dobyns, born about 1847, m J.S. Michael. Before marriage
she was a school teacher. There was a record of a marriage of America
Dobyns to Joseph S. Michael in Marion Co IN on 16 May 1878, but that
lists her age as 15. If this is her marriage, her age is incorrect,
since she was listed as an unmarried school teacher of 22 in the 1870
census. In the 1880 census of Marion Co, Joseph S. Michael 32 and
America Michael 32 are listed without children.
Kenerly Porter Dobyns, born 11 Dec 1848 (See ¶N01-204).
Sarah C. Dobyns, b about 1851, unmarried
Thereza "Thursey" Dobyns, b Jan 1853, m 7 Oct 1890 Marion Co IN to John
H. Wooley, b Nov 1842. She appeared with her husband and stepson Otis
D. Wooley in the 1900 census of Franklin Twp, Johnson Co IN. She
apparently taught music for a while in Arkansas City KS.
Olive A. "Oley" Dobyns, b about 1855, never married
Alice M. Dobyns, b about 1857, died young
Virginia D. Dobyns, b about 1859, apparently died young
Anna B. Dobyns, b about 1869, m 26 Feb 1884 Henricks Co IN to Edward E. White. Their son
was Everett White.
John Ellsworth Dobyns, b about 1863. It is possible that the Ellsworth
Dobbins who appears in the 1900 census of Indianapolis IN as a single
white male, boarder, born in Indiana in May 1865, age 34, stableman, is
John Ellsworth Dobyns. In the 1920 census of Spencer Co IN, there is a
John Dobbins, white male, 54, single, born in Indiana, both parents born
in Virginia, who is an inmate of the Spencer Co Poor Asylum.
There may have also been another Mary E. Dobyns who died in infancy.

the 1860 census of Spencer Co IN, he was lodged in the household of
William Burkholz. He enlisted in company K of the 63 regiment of
Indiana Infantry on 1 Sept 1862. He later applied for, but did not
receive, an invalid's pension. His mother Elizabeth then applied for a
pension as his dependent, but also did not receive it. He never married.
In his last years, he worked what little bit he was able to do for his
brother-in-law Joseph Ross.

¶N01-10 Charles Kinley "Charley" Dobyns (from ¶N01-02),
was born 26 Oct 1873 at Cambridge, Story Co IA, and died 4 July 1955
at McAlester, Pittsburg Co OK. He married 3 Feb 1896 at Mannsville,
Johnson Co OK to Somila Elizabeth "Mila" Selby, born May 1881 at Pilot
Point, Denton Co TX, died 7 Apr 1956 at McAlester OK. Her parents were
Zachary Taylor Selby and Nancy Ellen Hammer. Charles and Mila are both
are buried in Blue Cemetery, Pittsburg Co OK.
At the time of the death of his parents in Grayson Co TX in 1888,
Charley, was 15 or 16 years old. Charley and his younger siblings
crossed the Red River and walked 60 miles through the Chickasaw Nation
to a ranch run by Holmes Willis, whom they already knew, where they
worked for several years. At the time of their parents' death, Viola was
about four years old; she remained with Charley until grown. Charley
later told his children that after the death of his parents, there had
been no help from his older siblings and it had been very difficult to
survive.
Apparently Charley moved to Choate Prairie, Pittsburg Co, Choctaw Nation
with his siblings, David Fletcher and Viola Gertrude in 1894. His older
brother Oscar had married on the Checotah Plains on the Canadian River
in 1893. Charley brought his new bride Mila to Pittsburg Co as soon as
they were married. Home was a log cabin on Bull Creek, which runs into
McAlester Lake.
As a rancher Charley raised cows and hogs and he was also known to breed
fine horses. His breeding stock were from the Steel Dust line and the
Copper Bottom line.

¶N01-200 Joseph Marion Dobyns (from ¶N01-02)
was born 27 Mar 1876 in Iowa and died 4 Jan 1929 in Boswell, Choctaw Co
OK of pneumonia. He was buried in Crystal Cemetery, Atoka Co OK.
A large amount of circumstantial evidence made it highly likely that he
was a son of Kennerly and Mary Eliza Dobyns, but the clincher came from a
most unlikely place. In 1900 Joseph Marion Dobyns was briefly a
prisoner at Leavenworth, where records of his correspondence indicate
that he wrote to or received letters from at least three siblings,
children of Kennerly Dobyns. Among the papers found in the estate of
Joseph Marion Dobyns' daughter Lillian Birdie Dobyns Provost were two
photographs clearly identified as being of his brother David Fletcher
Dobyns and his family.
Joseph Marion Dobyns married (1st) Lula Belle Redwine on 7 Mar 1904 in
Calvin, Hughes Co, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. She was the widow
of a Mr Hayes and a daughter of Fletcher Houston Redwine. She was born 4
Feb 1878 in Pine Bluff AR, and died in 1918.
Joseph Marion Dobyns married (2nd) after 1918, Vivian Arlee Hayes, born
about 1900 and died after 1931, the daughter of Lula Belle Redwine by
her first marriage to Mr. Hayes. Family oral history says that Joseph
took up with Vivian several years before the death of his wife, and they
had a daughter before his first wife was dead. No documentary evidence
of their marriage has been discovered, so it may have been a common law
marriage. After the death of Joseph Marion Dobyns, Vivian married
Buford Mason, and they lived in Hugo OK.
Children of the first marriage:
Clyde J. Dobyns was born about 1905 at Ada OK. The census has him as 5
in 1910. He died 1 Jan 1953 Seattle WA. He married Bernice ---. He was

She married Pete Dennis.

¶N01-204 Kenerly Porter (later Porter Kinerly) Dobyns (from ¶N01-05) was born 11 Dec 1848. There is a biographical sketch of him,
supposedly from A Historical Sketch of Johnson County, Indiana ,
by D.D. Banta (1881). From about the age of 22 to 28, he was a school
teacher in Marion Co IN. He attended and graduated from Bryant &
Straton's Business College while teaching. He later attended the
Medical College of Indiana, graduating and becoming a medical doctor in
1879. He practiced in Johnson Co IN, Arkansas City KS, Hunnewell KS,
and Whiteland IN. He married Alice Crow on 19 Jun 1890 in Putnam Co IN,
although he probably had been married at least once before. In the 1900
census he appeared in Franklin Twp, Johnson Co IN, listed as born Dec
1854, age 48, losing four years in the process. His wife Alice C.
Dobyns was b Sept 1866, age 33, and his son Porter D. Dobyns was born
March 1900. There was also one servant. By the 1910 census of
Franklin Twp, Johnson Co IN, he had regained the lost years, being
listed as 61, with wife Alice C. Dobyns, age 43. They had been married
19 years, and had a son Porter B. Dobyns, age 10. The B. is in clear
handwriting. In the 1920 census, he appeared in Pleasant Twp, Johnson
Co IN, age 70, with his wife Alice C. Dobyns, 54, and his son Porter D.
Dobyns, 19. In 1910, 1918 and 1920, his address was 169 W. Jefferson,
Franklin IN. In 1890 there was a cryptic reference in ancestry.com to
Carter K. Dobyns, doctor, on W. Jefferson St,, Johnson Co IN. This
could be a typo or misheard name. In the 1920 census, he was listed as a
physician in general practice. In the Journal of the Indiana State Medical Association,,
Aug 1927, page 310, he was reported to have recently died at age 79.
His children:
probably John Ellsworth Dobyns, born 23 Jan 1878. He was a doctor of
veterinary medicine (DVM). When he registered for the draft on 2 Sept
1918 in Houston TX in WWI, he listed his nearest relative as Dr. P.K.
Dobyns of Franklin IN. This indicates that he probably was not married
at the time. He wrote that he was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Animal
Industry at 525 Charmille Bldg, Houston TX. He appears to have been
named after his father's brother of the same name, who had been born
about 1863. The Texas Board of Veterinary Examiners reports that he
graduated from some (unrecorded) veterinary college in Indiana in 1907,
and had already been admitted to practice in Alabama when he was
admitted to practice in Texas by reciprocity in 1918. He is not found
in the 1917, 1918 or 1919 editions of the Houston City Directory. He is
not found in the 1915, 1917, 1919 or 1921 editions of the Official
Register of the United States (Directory) where all Government employees
on the date of record (once every two years) were listed. There was a
record of the marriage of John E. Dobyns and Anna M. Williams in Hancock
Co IN on 13 Dec 1900, but it is not necessarily the same man. There
was a record in the 1930 census of Walton, Boone Co KY of John E.
Dobyns, veterinary, listed as age 60, born in Indiana, as a single
boarder in a boarding house.
Porter Dangerfield Dobyns, b 5 Mar 1900, d 16 May 1990. He attended De
Pauw University, in the class of 1923. He received a master's degree in
1936 from Indiana University In the 1930 census he was a public school
teacher, single, residing in a home that he owned on West Williamson
St, Franklin IN. He does not appear in the Franklin IN City Directories
for 1943, 1948, 1952, 1957 or 1959. His social security card was
issued in 1958 or 1959 in Kentucky. From at least 1955 through 1962, he
was residing in the Pleasure Ridge or Pleasure Ridge Park section of
Louisville KY, where he taught school in the early part of that period
and was probably retired toward the end. In all he taught school for 40
years. He was a Mason and a Baptist. He married on 10 Dec 1934 to Zora
Blanche McBride. His wife Blanche was a school teacher for at least a
part of that time. She was born 9 Mar 1901 and died in 10 Sept 1979 in
Lebanon, Boone Co IN, where Porter lived at least from 1975 to 1980.
The last known address (1990) of Porter D. Dobyns was RR 3 Box 90,
Frankfort IN. He died at the Milner Health Care Center in Rossville IN.
No children have been identified. His obituary (17 May 1990 Lebanon Reporter)
identified him as of Mechanisburg and said that he was survived only by
nieces and nephews. He was buried at the Whiteman Cemetery,
Michigantown IN.
