CHAPTER IV
ABNER3 DOBYNS (WILLIAM2, DANIELI) AND HIS DESCENDANTS
¶139 ABNER3 DOBYNS (WILLIAM2, DANIELI) (from ¶26) was born in Essex Co. Va. in 1727. (fn 197) He married ELIZABETH ----, possibly ELIZABETH HENLEY, in Essex Co. Va. The date of his death is undiscovered. ABNER3 DOBYNS inherited, according to the will of his father WILLIAM2 DOBYNS, a "plantation" of 200 acres in Essex Co. Va., bounding on a line of Capt. NICHOLAS SMITH, "it being a parcel of land whereon DANIEL DOBYNS Senr. last lived." The land had been conveyed by RICHARD2 DOBYNS, oldest child of DANIELI DOBYNS to his brother WILLIAM2 DOBYNS on 7 Nov 1724. (fn 198)
On 27 Jan 1753, ABNER DOBYNS mortgaged the 200 acres to the above-named NICHOLAS SMITH (recorded as Capt. NICHOLAS SMITH, Jr.). (fn 199) In deeds dated 5 Dec 1753 (fn 200) and 15 Apr 1755 (fn 201) ABNER DOBYNS and NICHOLAS SMITH conveyed the 200 acres in two parcels of 125 acres and 75 acres each to HENRY VASS of Essex Co. Va., thus completing the sale of ABNER DOBYNS' patrimony. However, ABNER DOBYNS still owned land in Essex Co., as in a conveyance of 50 acres from RICHARD DOBYNS to BOWLER DOBYNS on 11 Dec 1755, (fn 202) the eastern boundary line was said to adjoin the land of ABNER DOBYNS. No other ABNER DOBYNS was in Essex Co. at that time.
About a year later, on 24 June 1757, ABNER3 DOBYNS was drafted in Essex Co. for His Majesty's Service in the French and Indian War. FORREST UPSHAW, Captain of the Essex Co. Militia, conveyed the drafted and enlisted men, including ABNER DOBYNS, to Fredericksburg, Va. (fn 203) ABNER3 DOBYNS was enrolled on 2 July 1757 in the Virginia Regiment, commanded by GEORGE WASHINGTON, Esqr. He appeared on the roll of Capt. ROBERT SPOTTSWOOD's Company on 28 Aug 1757. He was recorded sick at Harding's Landing, but appears on the roll of Ft. Young, 7 Oct 1757, where he was described as "Age 30, 5 ft 8 in, planter, dark complexion, Sussex (sic) Co. Va." (fn 204) He was listed under "Casualties" in the roll of Oct 1757 and was discharged 1 Nov 1757. (fn 205) He presumably returned to Essex Co. Va.
Almost seven years later, on 21 May 1764, ABNER DOBYNS appears in Essex Co. Va. records when he was the subject of a grand jury presentment for not frequenting his parish church according to law. On 10 June 1764, the church wardens of South Farnham parish fined him 5 shillings to be paid for the use of the poor of the parish. (fn 206) Although only these two records have been discovered placing ABNER3 DOBYNS in Essex Co. Va. after his return from military service, they seem sufficient to identify him there. A diligent search has revealed no other ABNER DOBYNS of suitably contemporary dates in Essex Co. or in any other Virginia county.
The next record of what is considered to be this ABNER DOBYNS is the appearance of his widow ELIZABETH DOBYNS in Montgomery Co. Va., where on 11 Oct 1797 she received a grant of 130 acres "on the waters of Little River" in Montgomery Co. Va. (fn 207)
ELIZABETH DOBINS, named in the will as the "widow of ABNER", drew her will in Montgomery Co. Va. on 30 Nov 1819 and added two codicils dated 24 July 1821. (fn 208) Her will named her children JOHN, DICIA, THOMAS, JOANNA, ABNER and DANIEL. The inventory and appraisal were recorded in Jan 1822. (fn 210) There was a sale of a personal estate by JOHN DOBINS and ABNER DOBINS, administrators, on 21 Dec 1821. (fn 211) The estate was settled in May 1826. (fn 212)

¶140 THOMAS4 DOBYNS (ABNER3, WILLIAM2, DANIELI) (from ¶139) was presumably born in Essex Co. Va., probably the oldest child of ABNER3 DOBYNS and his wife ELIZABETH. On 20 Sept 1784 in Montgomery Co. Va., he married MARY HUFF, a widow. (fn 213) He died intestate in 1839. The inventory and appraisal of his estate were ordered 18 May 1839. (fn 214)
Distribution of the estate of THOMAS4 DOBYNS in 14 shares was made by WILLIAM DOBBINS, administrator, on 15 Apr 1842 and recorded in Montgomery Co. in Nov 1847. On 30 Aug 1821 in Montgomery Co., he married DRUCILLA WINITEER, born in 1797, daughter of JOHN WINITEER and his wife MARGARET. JOHN WINITEER left a will in Montgomery Co., proved in Sept Court 1831. (fn 247) Further proof of the marriage of JOHN DOBBINS and DRUCILLA WINITEER is found in an administration bond of JOHN5 DOBBINS and ISOM5 DOBBINS of Montgomery Co. to WILLIAM HOWARD, dated 21 Mar 1836, affirming part payment of a legacy from JOHN WINITEER to his daughter DRUCILLA, wife of JOHN5 DOBBINS. (fn 248) A number of deeds in Montgomery Co. record land transfers by JOHN DOBBINS and his wife DRUCILLA. Two tracts were bought in 1827, one each in 1829, 1832, and 1834. They sold tracts in 1829 and 1836. (fn 249)
After 1836 JOHN and DRUCILLA DOBBINS went west, going first probably to Missouri, then to Oregon by 10 Nov 1850. JOHN DOBBINS died testate on 9 Dec 1872 in North Plains, Washington Co. Oregon. His will left property to his widow DRUCILLA ANN and bequests to each one of his children except FLEMMON "who is not to recieve (sic) anything at the present

¶163 ABNER4 DOBBINS (ABNER3, WILLIAM2, DANIELI) (from ¶139) was presumably born in Essex Co. Va. On 21 Mar 1795 in Montgomery Co. Va. he married MARY KIRK. (fn 250) She died in May 1845 and was buried in a cemetery near Childress in Montgomery Co. Va. (tombstone record). ABNER4 DOBBINS died in 1844.
On 27 Nov 1799 ABNER DOBBINS purchased land in Montgomery Co. Va. from ISRAEL LORTON. (fn 251) He made other land purchases in Montgomery Co. in 1807, 1808 and 1813. (fn 252) ABNER4, THOMAS4 and JOHN4 DOBBINS, sons of ELIZABETH and ABNER3 DOBBINS, and many of the children of these sons, purchased land around the original grant made to ELIZABETH (widow of ABNER3) DOBBINS in 1797. All of this land was closely situated in the area of New River and its branches -- Little River, Meadow Creek, Mill Creek, etc. (fn 253)
The will of ABNER4 DOBBINS, drawn 18 Oct 1844, proved Nov 1844 in Montgomery Co. Court. named wife MARY, sons MARTIN, HENLEY, MADISON, and ANDERSON, daughters REBECCA, ELIZABETH, PEGGY and NANCY, and son-in-law ALEXANDER VICKORS, who was sole executor. (fn 254) The will stipulated that
"all my land where I now live be equally divided between my two sons HENLEY and MADISON, but about fifty acres of the above said lands heretofore sold to MARTIN DOBBINS and ANDERSON DOBBINS is excepted in the aforesaid gift."
The executor was directed to make title in the property over to the individuals designated. ALEXANDER VICKERS failed to make title over in his lifetime. As a result, after his death, two quitclaim deeds to the land were signed on 19 June 1847 and on 18 Feb 1854 to MARTIN DOBBINS by the heirs of ABNER4 DOBBINS, to wit HENLEY C. DOBBINS, JAMES and ELIZABETH HOWERTON, the heirs of MARGARET DOBBINS COFER, JAMES R. COFER, GORDON COFER, BONILDA [Begin original page 61] "AURILDY" I. COFER, MARTIN and MELVINA DOBBINS, ANDERSON L. and LETITIA DOBBINS, REBECCA VICKERS and NANCY and CHARLES D. LUCAS. (fn 255)

Each of the heirs of ABNER4 DOBYNS and their spouses is named in this deed except MARGARET L. DOBBINS, who was apparently dead then, because her husband JOSEPH COFER was named alone. On 18 Feb 1854 a second deed confirming the one above was signed by the same heirs and also by "GORDON COFER, AURILDY I. his wife, and RAYBURN COFER, the two last being children of MARGARET COFER decd, late MARGARET L. Va. at this time who may have been the son of JOHN4 DOBYNS, Sr., brother of ABNER4 DOBBINS, although this is undetermined. That HENLEY C. DOBBINS was the son of ABNER4 DOBBINS is proved by two quitclaim [Begin original page 71] deeds in Montgomery Co. dated 19 June 1847 and 18 Feb 1854 in which HENLEY C. DOBBINS is named as one of the heirs of ABNER4 DOBBINS (fn 300) and other documents on record in Montgomery Co. He was unmarried on 18 Feb 1854, because on that date he signed the two abovementioned quitclaim deeds without the additional signature of a spouse to release dower.
On 9 Sept 1858 [Original text said 1758. KWD 1987] HENLEY C. DOBBINS, age 47, married LUCINDA DOBBINS (from ¶218) age 30, both single and both born in Montgomery Co. The husband's parents were ABNER and MARY DOBBINS and the wife's parents were JOHN and MARY DOBBINS, thus making them first cousins. They apparently had children, but none have been identified with certainty.

Va., possibly in 1777 (fn 303) and was probably one of the two younger children of ABNER3 DOBYNS and his wife ELIZABETH (HENLEY?). He was married to MARY ----, who may not have been his first wife, by 12 Jan 1826. On that date, JOHN DOBINS, Sr. and his wife MARY of Montgomery Co. Va. conveyed to (his brother) THOMAS DOBYNS "100 acres on the waters of Little River, being the same land devised to JOHN DOBINS by will of (his mother) ELIZABETH DOBBINS." (fn 304) JOHN4 DOBINS was alive in 1850. (fn 305)
ELIZABETH DOBINS, widow of ABNER3, in her will drawn 30 Nov 1819, had bequeathed to her son JOHN and her daughter DICIA her original tract of 130 acres in Montgomery Co. Va. "excepting 30 acres formerly conveyed to THOMAS4 DOBBINS." (fn 306) The will recorded bequests to other children, with the residue of her personal estate to JOHN and DICIA. By agreement, JOHN and DICIA divided the land on 30 Aug 1823, the east side going to JOHN and the west side to DICIA. (fn 307) By June 1824, DICIA DOBYNS was dead and the land reverted to JOHN. On 5 Aug 1825, JOHN mortgaged the property, "being one moiety of the land devised by ELIZABETH DOBBINS decd to the said JOHN and his sister DICIA" to JAMES ANDERSON with ABNER DOBYNS (brother of JOHN) as surety. (fn 308)

He was age 47 and she was 30, both single and born in Montgomery Co. Va. His parents were listed as ABNER and MARY DOBBINS and her parents were listed as JOHN and MARY DOBBINS.

¶219 DICIA4 DOBBINS (ABNER3, WILLIAM2, DANIELI) (from ¶139) was probably the youngest child of ABNER3 DOBYNS and his wife ELIZABETH (HENLEY?). She died unmarried between 30 Aug 1823, when she signed a land agreement with her brother JOHN DOBYNS (fn 310) and 8 June 1824, when the inventory and appraisal of her estate was made by ISOM DOBBINS, and recorded during the July 1824 session of the Montgomery Co. Court (fn 311). The settlement of her estate was completed by the certification of all claims signed by WILLIAM HOWARD and D. HALL and recorded in the May 1826 Court of Montgomery Co.
